Suggest Treatment For Constipation And Gas

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Jul 2016
Question: My wife, 61 years old, has been having what began as most probably gas pains on tuesday evening. Occasional bouts of constipation and gas pains are not uncommon for her. She doesn't do really well at keeping herself hydrated, drinks mostly ice tea with quite a bit of sugar. What has me concerned is the longevity of the symptoms, normally by the middle of second day all is well, but at this point she is still in quite a lot of pain still, although most of this seems to now be centered towards her lower abdomen, as if it is slowly working itself through. My most urgent question for you is, given that she is still in quite a bit of pain, what should we be watching for, in terms of the possibility of something more serious going on, and should we be taking her in to a doctor tonight or tomorrow? Thank you very much for your time and advice with this.... -Bill Wilkinson

Brief Answer:
Do consult Physician if there is distension of abdomen

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir

I understand your concern and apprehension . Chronic Constipation and incomplete evacuation of stools may produce colicky pain , if the pain is not associated with distension of abdomen and nausea/vomiting then there seems to be no cause for concern. If there re any of the following sign/symptoms then do not hesitate to see your primary care physician

1. Distension of abdomen

2. Nausea/vomiting

3. Persistent or worsening pain

In the meantime i would suggest the following

1. Plenty of oral fluids: 2-3 liter of water a day
2. High fiber diet: 2 servings of vegetable salad and fruits everyday
3. Oral Laxatives like SYR. SUCRALFATE. 5ml twice a day.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take Care

Best Regards
