Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Can you tell me:

Does the erection fail while you are in the process of putting the condom on?
Does it fail while you have the condom on?
Is this a recent problem, such as with a new partner, or has this always been a problem from the first time you used a condom?

Thanks - information to follow.

I have had 3 partners and when I have used a condom the erection has failed when I have put the condom on. I have no problems in a long term relationship and my partner is using the pill

Some information:

Detailed Answer:
Well, as you have probably figured, this is a fairly common problem among young men. I could not find any research statistics on how often it happens - as far as I can tell, no one has done a study on it for frequency/rate of occurrence.

In young men (which is whom it usually occurs), the problem is usually caused by a bit of performance anxiety. I wish I could say "don't worry about it" and this would fix the problem, but trying not to have your thoughts focus on it as you put on the condom may help.

There are several tips you can try:
1. Practice putting a condom on when you are alone masturbating, which will help you get over some of the previous negative experiences with it.
2. Tell your partner that this problem happens and that it has nothing to do with your interest in her nor your ability to perform. Discussing it can help take a little psychological pressure off.
3. Ask your partner to put the condom on you. This helps many men.
4. Try putting the condom on during foreplay rather than right before intercourse.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

if these measures dont' work, is viagra any good. Is it worth trying to get a condom that "fits" or is a thinner one helpful?

Brief Answer:
Trying different size condoms:

Detailed Answer:
Yes to trying different condoms for fit.

If the problem is that you can get the condom on but lose erection during intercourse then a tighter or a thinner condom can be helpful. If it is thinner or tighter, be sure to leave a bit of loose end to avoid breakage.

If the problem is that you struggle to get the condom on quickly and then lose erection in the process, a larger condom can be helpful. But be careful as this can be tricky in that if it is too loose, it can come off during intercourse or immediately after orgasm.

About Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs - these would likely help, but should be a last resort. There are side effects (such as headache), and in a young man usually you can get past the condom collapse problem with some time and positive experiences. But if all else fails (and I don't think all else will fail!) then yes, see your doctor about Viagra.
