Posted on Mon, 13 Oct 2014
Question: my 8 year old has been fighting a mild cold for a couple weeks.as my whole house just recovered from cold and cough. The past 3 days at night she is complaining of headaches and sensitivity to light with a low grade temp. at night she seems to also have a lot more nasal congestion.
the next day she is perfectly fine ,no headache or sensitivity to light and no temp.just a little sniffle.
any thoughts where the tempature headache is due to and when should I take this more seriously.

Brief Answer:
Could be acute bacterial rhinosinusitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi..the symptoms you quote might fit into acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS). Though entire household suffering some similar illness point out towards common viral aetiology, it is unlikely that the kid is suffering from the same illness for so prolonged period.
Headache, light sensitivity and fever too point out towards the same ABRS.
She might require a course of antibiotics, preferably Amoxycillin-Clavulenate or Azithromycin.
My suggestion is that you take her to her regular paediatrician and get her evaluated and get the antibiotics prescribed.
She will be better in no time.

Brief Answer:
Headache and fever- common in ABRS

Detailed Answer:
This is quite common...the headache and temperature is quite common in ABRS. These symptoms occurring only at night is also common and there is no need to worry. Please consult your paediatrician for the further management.
