Suggest Treatment For Cold, Cough And 101°F Fever In A Child

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Oct 2017
Question: My daughter is 1.4 year old(12.5 kg) and from past 3 days suffering from cold.

Very first day she had cold and 101 *F fever as well, we gave her Sinarest 0.5 ml evening and Crocin 120 5ml at night. Next day she was ok with just cold and we didn't give her any medicine. But the second day night she started coughing little at night. Yesterday she continued to have cold and normal but night again started coughing and getting irritated with cough and cold at night and we gave Sinarest 0.5 ml at night. Today again the cold continues but little cough. We tried giving her steam one time and nasal drops few times.

Last time you had advised to give her Atarax drops but she had more cough than this. Please note that cough is not continuous. Kindly provide your advise.

Brief Answer:
Atarax and steam inhalation should suffice

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking once again on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections. Since such infections usually have an allergic component it is advisable to give some antiallergic like Sinarest or Atarax. Atarax is a very good antiallergic and would be of choice even if the cough is more. Please do not assume Atarax to reduce the cough. It only reduces the allergic irritation that triggers the cough. It also helps in reducing the nasal secretions, sneezing etc. The main treatment for the cough would be steam inhalation.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol (P-250, Crocin) to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days. However, if the rate of breathing seems rapid, make the child lie down and count the abdominal movements for one full minute. If the rate is greater than or equal to 40 breaths/min, you would need to seek medical attention as it could indicate pneumonia.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

We started giving her Atarax 1ml thrice a day from day before yesterday afternoon. Below is her condition now.

1. She still has severe cold and mucus keep coming from her nose.
2. Cough has increased, and sometimes vomits while coughing.
3. Couple of times she did vomit immediately after taking food and Atarax.
4. No fever
5. From yesterday we can hear nose blocking sound when she is sleeping.
6. She seems to be active otherwise and taking breast feed.
7. We can feel from her face that she is not well.

Kindly advise whether we should take her to the paediatrician for further evaluation or can we wait for another couple of days to see how she progress?

Do you recommend any other medication along with Atarax?

Age:1.4 months

Brief Answer:
You need to be patient

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the updates

1. Atarax will help to reduce this mucus. Give it some time.
2&3. Steam inhalation will help.
4. Good
5. Nasoclear nasal drops will help.
6. Good
7. Give it some time. It is possibly due to the nasal block. Since she is otherwise active and fine you need not worry.

You should wait. Please remember that it is likely to last for 5-7 days from the beginning.

No other medication recommended other than nasoclear and steam inhalation.
