Suggest Treatment For Clogged Left Nasal Passage And Seasonal Leaf-mold Allergy

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Jan 2015
Question: I have a clogged left nasal passage that my prescription nasal decongestant cannot seem to reach or affect. The clogging seems to take place behind where the decongestant, even with head tilted back, can reach. I suffer from leaf-mold allergy in the fall and early winter and always the left side is more effected, but right now the disparity is nearly 100% and unprecedented. What do you think my problem is?

Brief Answer:
Allergic rhinosinusitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The description given by you seems to be related to a condition of the nose called allergic rhino sinusitis.

The obstruction on the left side of the nose could be due to various factors such as deviated nasal septum, hypertrophied turbinate or nasal polyps or nasal crusts. A thorough examination of the nose aided by nasal endoscopy can identify the cause of obstruction.

Along with fluticasone nasal spray you should also use a saline nasal spray. Saline nasal spray can decongest the nasal mucosa and release any clogged up secretions. Do steam inhalation 3-4 times a day.

Hope with the above measures you should be alright. Revert back to me for any follow up queries.

None of the conditions you cited is at all likely, since I had been free and clear for two-three weeks prior.

Is a saline nasal spray available "over the counter"? If so, what do you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it's available OTC

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back and providing the inputs. If you were having a normal air flow before, then the most likely cause of the block could be either allergic nasal congestion or inspissated secretions.

Saline nasal spray would be beneficial to you in this situation. It is freely available OTC and you can use it as and when required.

Wish you good luck and good health.
