Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hi Dr. I am 66 yrs old and have had pain in the back of my neck for over 1 mo. My NP has told me after an xray that I have narrowing of the cervical spine. She is following conservative tx. such as heat application, pain med- Tylenol and mild exercise while I am in pain. Also going in a pool to exercise. What concerns me is my future. What happens with this? I was kind of stunned and didn,t think of questions . Thank you

Brief Answer:
This is cervical cpondylosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello madam,
I have read your case and I believe that you are having cervical spondylosis. In this disease there is disc herniation and nerve compression. This is slowly progressive disease and if not treated properly can cause radiating pain and weakness in arm.
Your doctor is doing right in treating you with conservative methods.
I would suggest following things in my patient to treat cervical spondylosis.
1. Intermittent traction exercises and neck muscles strengthening exercises.
2.Tablet Pregabanil and Methylcobal daily.
3. Soft cervical collar to prevent muscle fatigue.
4.Avoid very high pillow and keeping your neck in same position for long time like watching TV or computer.
These measures will prevent further complication in you. Let me know if you want to ask any other questions.
Thanks and take care.
