Suggest Treatment For Bulging Disc

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,
My wife has been suffering from Bulging Disc (Spondylolosthesis L5/S1 (M43.19))
we consulted a doctor(neuro surgeon) in Germany (right now we live in Germany). we were told that surgery was not recommended as she is still young and then she attended some physio sessions.
during the physio sessions she was given some massage. apart from massage no other treatment was provided.
she was alright for quiet some time. but some times she is getting a sever pain (mainly in hips, legs and ankles. she also gets tingling feeling in lower legs)
I am just wondering is should I consult a sports medicine specialist?
should I visit a specialized physio therapist? if so what is the right name?
can disc bulge be handled through some rehab?
we were also told that to avoid pain she should gain any weight and also exercise like running may increase the pain. what are the recommended exercises for people with disc bulge?

thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
She needs to consult an orthopedician.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and tingling that she is having is due to the effect of the disc bulge. Mild nerve root compression can cause the tingling. She needs rest and oral muscle relaxants for relief. For this it is best to consult an orthopedician. After the acute pain subsides she can start with back strengthening exercises under the guidance of a proficient physiotherapist. It will help in retarding further progression of the problem. Exercises like swimming and mild aerobics are good for back pains and disc prolapse.
I hope this answers your query.
