Suggest Treatment For Bowel Incontinence While On Effexor And Adderall

Question: I see a psychiatrist (the same one for 16 years) who recently prescribed generic Effexor for my depression, which is nearly debilitating. my meds include (in the morning) amphetamine salt combo er 30 mg, atenolol 25 mg tab, and venlafaxine 75 mg er cap. my night meds include risperidone 3 mg tab, clonazepam 2 mg tab, mirtrazapine 15 mh tab. I took all the meds for 2 weeks and began to feel much better. however, the day after that I became very ill with constipation for 2 days followed by 3 days of uncontrollable diarrhea. 2 days before that, I ate a hamburger at a Wendy's in a strange neighborhood. the day the constipation began, I ate garlic bread and cheesy bread from dominos pizza. the prior night and day of pizza I imagined I felt mice moving under all my cushions on loveseats and couches and upholstered furniture. I called an exterminator out to the house and he inspected the entire house and suspect
furniture and told me I had absolutely no mice anywhere in my home. I felt scared and frightened. I cut off the adderal xr and the diarrhea quit for a day. then yesterday, I took an Effexor and Adderall and once again had uncontrollable bowels and ruined yet another pair of underwear. I stopped taking the Effexor this morning and have felt fine all day; no accidents at all. did I have some kind of allergic to the Effexor, lose my mind or have food poisoning??????

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

What you are describing is likely a brief psychotic reaction. This could be related to the Effexor, considering this is the only medication change before this happened. It's also notable you had diarrhea so severely for three days. So, the picture is complicated. It might be that you were delirious from fluid and electrolyte depletion related to the diarrhea. It may be that Effexor flipped you into a manic state with psychosis. Here's how I would proceed -- take a week or so to let your body calm down from the diarrhea/constipation. Then, you could restart the Effexor very slowly, and watch very carefully for any type of psychosis. If it recurs, then you know this was related to the Effexor, and you can stop it and try a different medication.
