Question: Hi,
I had an upper airways infection last year and was admitted into the ICU because i could not breath. I have been treated and was fine. However, i was told to avoid many things such as spicy food, dust, cold etc. Now I have yellowish catarrh and blocked nose at night. It has also made my voice hoarse. Please what can I take? Thank you, XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Viral infection of the upper respiratory tract...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

You seem to be having viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, going down to the larynx. Viral infection is self-limiting and symptomatic medicines would suffice.

My suggestions to you are:
1. To drink plenty of warm water, this will reduce the congestion in the nose, throat and the larynx
2. To do steam inhalation 2-3 times a day, for 2 minutes only, this will relieve the nasal block and reduces the congestion over the vocal cords
3. Try taking ambroxol or bromhexine for reducing the consistency of the secretions
4. Saline nasal spray helps in clearing the nasal secretions and relieving the nasal block
5. Absolute voice rest for few days
6. Avoid chilled food and beverages/coffee/smoking/alcohol if any

With the above measures you should be alright. If the symptoms persist you can start with antibiotics (preferably a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid or cefuroxime alone).

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Brief Answer:
Ambroxol and bromhexine are mucolytics...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

Ambroxol and bromhexine are the mucolytics used to reduce the consistency of thick secretions in the sinuses and the chest, and also it aids in easy clearance of the same. In many of the countries it is available over the counter. It is one of the safe medicines with negligible side effects.

I wish you good health and good luck.
