Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: "I tore my frenulum during intercourse last night. It has been bleeding quite badly for nearly 24 hours. Also, the blood is a strange thick, almost rubbery texture. How can i slow/stop the bleeding? should I go to the hospital?"

Brief Answer:
Please rush to hospital immediately to stop bleeding

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
The tear in your frenulum requires emergency medical care if bleeding is not stopping even after 24 hours following the incident. Small tears might get better without treatment but your injury seems to be involving a large blood vessel. Also, it is difficult to maintain continuous pressure over the frenulum to stop the bleeding. You might require a suture to stop the bleeding. Meanwhile you can wrap some cubes of ice in a small towel and hold it closely to the bleeding area till you get to the hospital.

Even after treatment, you have to take precautions of the wound. Avoid sexual activity until the tear has healed. Once it has healed, you can try using a lubricant during sex to prevent the problem from happening again. It might take 2 weeks to heal. Right now you are required to keep your genital clean and dry.

Please wear loose inner clothes and maintain genital hygiene. Avoid masturbation or sex for two weeks.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Erectile dysfunction not commonly seen in frenulum tears

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Minor injuries do not cause any problems in future sex life. Sometimes the wound might form a scar and this requires you use lubrication jelly and avoid rough sex. Erectile dysfunction is not seen in torn frenulum but might occur if there is a serious penis injury. It is important to know what injury you had and treatment taken.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
