Suggest Treatment For Benign Cyst In Breast

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I had a breast biopsy today to aspirate a cyst. It turned out to be not liquid and they showed me small brown chunks from the sample. Does the color of the tissue sample mean anything? And, what are the possible types of masses of something between liquid and solid, like gel? I have primary immune deficiency so I am thinking abscess. Female, age 57, also hx of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Brief Answer:
Benign cyst likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The small brown chunks in the sample are suggestive of necrosis and degenerated tissue. It can be present inside an abscess or a simple cyst also.
The presence of brown material cannot suggest regarding the origin of the cyst. A malignant mass is less likely if the cyst was not increasing in size.
The gel like material is suggestive of a benign cyst or an infection. The biopsy report will help in confirming the diagnosis.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for the very informative information. I have a lot of rib pain radiating around that area, dx of pleurisy. But also axillary pain on the same side, under my arm, and mild swelling under the arm. Do you think if this breast mass was an infection it could cause these symptoms? I never get a fever even with pneumonia or abscess. I realize lab tests will explain (next week), but I like to be prepared so I can better discuss it with the doctor. The problem is separating out the rheumatoid arthritis/lupus symptoms (for both me and the doctor).

Brief Answer:
Infection likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The pain and swelling under the arm are more suggestive of an infection in the area- can cause swollen lymph nodes in the axilla. You can do a hot fomentation in the area for relief.
Hope my answer is helpful.
