Suggest Treatment For Back Pain While Suffering From Shingles

default
Posted on Sat, 15 Apr 2017
Question: I think I may have shingles. I have intense back pain and nearly constant spasms on one side. I also have a rash with blisters on the same side...groin area and low back. I am miserable! What can I do until I can get in to see a doc? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Take symptomaric treatment. Start oral antivirals as soon as possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist).
I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
In shingles, specific treatment with an oral antiviral e.g valacyclovir 1gm (valtrex), must be started within the first 72 hours as it hastens healing, significantly reduces pain and also the duration of post herpetic neuralgia. Therefore I suggest you to take an appointment as soon as possible. Valacyclovir is prescription medicine.
Till that time you may start symptomatic treatment with oral antiinflammatory/painkillers e.g ibuprofen or diclofenac. In addition you may apply a topical antibacterial cream e.g 2% mupiricin cream or 2% fusidic acid cream, twice daily

Regards
