Question: I have been suffering for 5 weeks with ddry stuffy nose, dry throat and mouth. Ive been on a prednisone pack and also Axithromycin pack, neither worked. the Dr. then prescribed Qnasl, I took that for 6 days and it made me too dry so I stopped. I am a diabetic on metforminn 1000 mg. two times a day and I also have Blood pressure medicine (Benicar 40 mg and Amlodipine Besylate 10 Mg once a day. In the morning I wake up feeling good and have to blow my nose then the extreme dryness comes on. i find if I cry I actually feel better because i then have to blow my nose. I do not cry on purpose, this has gotten to me and taken its toll! I do not have a fever or my nose discharge, when I do have some is clear sometimes with blood. I have been using saline nasal spray as needed (12 times a day) Ayr nasal gel to help the dryness and I have humidifiers all over the house.

Brief Answer:
Atrophic rhinitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query.

After going through the description given by you, I am of the opinion that you could be suffering from Atrophic Rhinitis.

Due to your age and the present diabetic status, the nasal glands get atrophied, thus causing dryness and crusting in the nose.

Throat pain or irritation is due to nasal block and mouth breathing.

My suggestion to you is:
1. Drink plenty of warm water.
2. Do steam inhalation
3. Continue with saline nasal spray and saline nasal ointment.
4. Consume plenty of fresh vegetables and suitable fruits rich in vitamin A and D.
5. You need to do alkaline nasal douching. The alkaline nasal solution consists of 30 gm of sodium bicarbonate, 30 gm of sodium biborate and 60 gm of sodium chloride. You should take one teaspoon of this mixture and dissolve it in a glass of lukewarm water and do the nasal douching at least 2-3 times daily.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.

Brief Answer:
Alkaline nasal douching...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

You are already taking the necessary medicines. Only addition to the present treatment is alkaline nasal douching and using the mixture of 25% glucose & glycerin drops in the nose, to keep the nose moist and crust free. Oral potassium iodide can be tried, it helps in increasing the nasal secretions.

Hope this response has been helpful to you.
