Suggest Treatment For Asthma And Cough In A Child

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Apr 2017
Question: My son 4 years 9 months old suffers from asthma and coughs a lot. He takes Budacort 100 inhaler twice daily, 2 puffs each, and ventolin inhaler SOS. But this too does not help in acute cough, and finally leads to fever, and fever does not go without anti-biotics. Is there a way to reduce the cough? Doctor has suggested levolin inhaler now, instead of ventolin and suggested a cough syrup SOS at night. Please let me know the side effects and let me know how to prevent this ? should we avoid some food items like milk, fruits, assuming this is allergy?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query and I understand your concerns about your son.
Most children will overcome these problems at they grow older. So be assured now. Having said let me directely address the questions.

Is there a way to reduce the cough?

===Cough expectorants are usually prescribed and I am sure the drug which was SOS would be the same. Please name it

Doctor has suggested levolin inhaler now, instead of ventolin and suggested a cough syrup SOS at night.
==Levolin is a newer than ventolin. Both have same action but levolin has prolonged action so fewer doses.

Please let me know the side effects and let me know how to prevent this ?
===Safe medicine. the side effects are minimal and would not be observed as well.

should we avoid some food items like milk, fruits, assuming this is allergy?

Your doctor should have determined the cause of attacks. The common cold is the most common cause of attacks that trigger it. Besides change in weather, hard play, allergy, infection direct exposure to smoke etc.. Avoid cold stuff, use diluted milk... fresh fruits are good but not refrigerated ones...

Thank you so much, just few clarifications:
1)Recently doctor advised Benadryl syrup 5 ml at night, is it fine? He also takes Cetzine syrup for 3-5 days when he has running nose. Is it ok at times to give both cetzine and benadryl, when he has runing nose and cough?
2)Earlier a different doctor used to give ventolin syrup. Which one is better, ventolin syrup or benadryl syrup? or is it better to continue only with levolin inhaler, as inhaler has less side effects compared to syrup?
3)Does taking budacort continuously decreases immunity? Initially doctor had told to continue for 3 months, but it is 4 months and we are not able to stop as he is falling sick. Is it ok?
4) My son is 4 years 9 months old, and weight is 14.5 kg. Is this ok?

My opinion

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1) Suggest to take Cetrizine or Benadryl syrup. Not both. Both are antihistamines and have additive effect and would be a higher dose for the kid.

2) Ventolin is a air way dilator and Benadryl is anti histamine (prevent allergic reaction) so both have different actions. Inhalers are better if not controlled take oral course.

3) Budesonide is a mild steroid. It is safe for children as well. If the problem is not stopping and kid falls sick it is important to review the medicine to a different form.

4) Underweight because of chronic lung issues. Immunity will be less. Nutrient deficiencies persist. It is better supplement with multivitamins and minerals along with food.

Thank you very much Doctor. Some more questions, please help.
1. Suspecting milk to be his source of allergy, his doctor has prescribed OstoCalcium syrup once a day for a month for now. My child earlier used to have Bevon syrup. Do you think this type of syrup is ok to continue for some time?
2. I have also thought of natural supplements like Amway nutrilite, chavanprash, etc, can you suggest if these things help ?
3. How do I work towards building his immunity? he is prone to cross-infection I feel, and not been able to send to school for 4-5 months.
4. At what age can i see some improvement?
Thanks

YES CONTINUE CALCIUM MAG and VIT D SUPPLEMENTS (OSTOCALCIUM has all)
2. I have also thought of natural supplements like Amway nutrilite, chavanprash, etc, can you suggest if these things help ?

Please do not overdose all at a time. Use one supplement at a time.

3. How do I work towards building his immunity? he is prone to cross-infection I feel, and not been able to send to school for 4-5 months.

Careful diet under supervision of dietitian. It is better to fight cross infections once his immunity improves so that he develops all the antibodies. You can let him teach at home and directly join him at 6 yrs of age.

4. At what age can i see some improvement?

90% recover as they complete 5 yrs +/- 1 yr.
