Question: Mr XXXXXXX 64/ M was admitted in hospital with c/o recurrent anemia with HB 4. in sept 16 & now 9.3 with malena. Capsule endoscopy done which revealed bleeding single angiodysplasia and consideration of antegrade endoscopy.
As per the discharge summary and the usg , it is mentioned that the patient is a chronic alcoholic.
would request your advise whether the present condition and symptoms can be attributed to his alcoholism.

Mr. XXXXXXX presented with dropping Hb and melena.
Melena indicates upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
His OGD showed varices and features of portal hypertension.
These and USG and Doppler findings indicate cirrhosis of liver. Chronic alcoholism can cause cirrhosis.
This condition itself can cause a drop in Hb and melena.

In addition he had a bleeding angioectasia in small bowel which also can cause a drop in Hb. But alcoholism may not cause angioectasia.

So to answer your question, yes, some of the symptoms and signs may be attributed to alcoholism.
