Posted on Fri, 17 Feb 2017
Question: I went to the dentist office today and wenthru x rays and found out that I had an abcess on my rear left bottom tooth.I was prescribed antibiotics(amoxicillin) Monday evening along with some motrin,Tylenol 3. And my pain level is only a step below what it was on Monday evening. My main question is when will the antibiotics kick in because I'm considering some type of emergency appointment if this does not subside in the next two days.thank you for your time

Brief Answer:
medication, 3 to 5 days, root canal treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
The abscess can be treated with a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole( if you are not allergic) but this is temporary solution. You have to get the causative tooth treated with root canal treatment. The infection will subside in 3 to 5 days.
So consult an oral physician and get it treated.
I hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries reply me back. take care.

Thanks for the info. I just finished two full days of meds minus the first initial dose this Monday so hopefully by Friday things would be better. My dentist did discuss a root canal if the tooth could be saved. I will stay on course and hope that the pain will subside soon. Thanks
