Suggest Treatment For A Salivary Gland Infection

Question: I have had a salivary gland infection. Infection and swelling gone but I still have a large hard lump at the base of my ear. Should I go back to my doctor to have this checked ?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

Hard lump at the base of your ear might be due to following reasons:
1. Antibioma: Sometimes in case of infection of the parotid gland(salivary gland),if there is pus collection in the gland due to infection,and instead of draining the pus,if only antibiotics are given,then pus may get fibrosed forming a hard swelling called Antibioma.
2.Lymph node enlargement-Lymph node at the base of your ear may get enlarged after infection in your parotid gland.But generally it is not hard but firm.
3. Parotid gland Tumor-it may also present as a swelling at the base of your ear.

So,to find out the cause,it would be advisable to have Ultrasonography of your neck and Pathological examination-Fine needle aspiration cytology of the swelling.
