Suggest Treatment For Bartholin's Cyst In An Elderly Person
I have been diagnosed with a Bartholin Cyst on my left side. I have had this before but I remember it going away or maybe it became smaller and I did not notice so much. I visit the doctor every year, sometimes even more than once. I am going to see a specialist (gym oncologist) this coming week, but I would like to know your thoughts. I just turned 56 years old and I have not had my period for the past 18 months, which puts me in the menopause category. Thank you
Routine post menopausal gyno examination ....bartholin cyst is benign
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
If you have been amenorrhoeic since last 18 months , then you have already entered menopause. If this is a routine visit to a gyn oncologist then he would take a PAP SMEAR for cervical cancer screening and request a pelvis ultrasound with a per speculum and per vaginal examination.
Bartholin cyst is a benign cyst and if present and symptomatic , then would have to be dealt surgically with marsupialization where a small incision is made on the inner wall of vagina and cyst fluid is allowed to drain. The vagina is not stitched but allowed to heal by secondary healing under antibiotic cover and local antiseptics.
You may discuss the procedure, if required ( unless you are symptomatic) with your doctor in detail and take an informed decision.
I hope i have answered your query,
Regards
Are there any studies that this type of cyst can turn into something really serious for older women?

Detailed Answer:
No, these cysts are benign collection cysts and very rarely may turn malignant.
I have not seen or have come across any studies yet.
