Suggest Remedy To Wean Off Temazepam

Question: I have been on alprazalam & temazepam for year now for sleep. I was able to get off alprazalam but am taking 30 mg of temazepam & can't get a good sleep - light sleep, weird dreams, wakefulness . Last night at 4 am I took 2 benedryls. That helped. How do I get off sleeping pills??? I've tried melatonin & herbs in the past & they did not help. People have to sure but not sure how to get a normal sleep. What can I do ?? I'm 56 yrs old female

Your goal of getting off sleeping pills is a wonderful one. The pills you have been taking - Xanax, Restoril, and Benadryl - have significant side effects, including decline in cognitive ability, decline in memory, oversedation during the day, rebound anxiety and insomnia, and risk of falls.

The best way to get off these current sleeping pills is to undergo a careful taper monitored by a psychiatrist, and withdrawing or stopping to quickly can lead to seizures.

To replace them, consider the following medications: Trazodone, Remeron, Ambien, Seroquel. These are nonaddictive sleep aids.
