Question: Hi,
I used to have Sinius problem few years back and I am 66 years old. Since past a week, my throat has become dry and nose is blocked. I have been using Otrivin drops since a week but did not see any improvement. I have not approached any doctor.

I am a diabetic since 5 to 6 years. Please advise as my nose is completely blocked. In addition, throat has also become dry.

Brief Answer:
Try setroid nasal spray with steam inhalation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.

Since you have used otrivin nasal for your blocked nose and has not improved much, you can also try fluticasone nasal spray (Brand Name: Flonase or Veramyst) which is a steroid preparation (much more effective than otrivin) for the nose and works as an anti inflammatory medication.

It is used for inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) which is usually a seasonal occurrence in many people.

Taking fluticasone will reduce the swelling and inflammation in the nose and the mucus formed will be less, making you feel more comfortable and decrease the stuffy nose sensation.

This should be taken as two sprays in to each nostril and you will feel the benefits a day after you start using it.

However, steroid spray may also cause mild rise in blood sugar,so you may need to adjust your anti-diabetic drugs dosage temporarily.

It will also be helpful to take antibiotic (like amoxicillin 500 mg) for your dry throat which is likely to be due to inflammation (bacterial or viral). This will also control the sinus infection and the amount of mucus draining through the nose. Amoxicillin is to be taken for a short course of about 3 to 4 days. (please get it prescribed by your local doctor)

Apart from above, nebulization with steam inhalation 3 to 4 times daily will certainly help for getting symptomatic relief from blocked nose.

Take oral antihistamine tablets like levocetrizine 10 mg twice daily for dry throat.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask any more doubts.
