Suggest Remedy For Swelling And Pain On Arm After Injection

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: I was in the er and they were trying to get an iv in my arm. They were able to get blood but could not advance the iv. As soon as she took it out it swelled and caused me intense pain (which i still have)I also have a massive bump that hurts if i touch it lightly. she tried putting the iv in the bend of my left arm. It got really hot as well but i cannot bend my arm without it hurting really bad. Can i develop a dangerous blood clot from this? Like the ones that go to your lungs? They run in my family and im really worried. I have never had pain this bad in my arm from an iv.

Brief Answer:
Little chance of clot formation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query
I understand your concern.
What happened is that the iv solution came out of the vein and has produced swelling. If it is still red , painful and tender to touch , you may have developed a cellulitis in addition. There is little risk of a thrombosis and an embolism from it.
If it does not disappear in a day or two or if the pain, redness and swelling is increasing or if you have fever, you should see a doctor and have yourself examined and treated. You may require antibiotics and antiinflammatory medicines.

since she was not able to get the iv fully in no solution went into my vein. she had tried to flush it and only got a tiny amount in before she had to remove it. It turned blue today and i can still feel a bunp but not as much pain today. why do blood clots not form from trama from an iv?

Brief Answer:
Extravasation of fluid and blood

Detailed Answer:
The fluid did not go into the vein but into the tissue outside. Since it was red initially and has turned purple or blue, there was leakage of blood from the pierced blood vessel. It would subside as these get absorbed.
Clots form inside the blood vessels starting with the sticking together of platelets in conditions which increase the risk like stasis in varicose veins , hypercoagulable states like post operative state , certain diseases, use of OCP, injury to the endothelium which can form a nidus for clot formation etc. It is unusual following an iv unless an irritant solution was given. The trauma of pricking the vein usually doesn't cause.
