Question: Hello,
I have poison ivy for the past week. I have been using Pramosone cream. The rash looks worse every day. Should I try something else. I think I see some blistering beginning. Also, I have no spleen . Will I get an infection from poison ivy?

The poison ivy rash is due to the body's allergic response to the oil of the tree ( oil is named as Urushiol).

The rash the blistering skin lesions or the hives appear only where the oil touches your skin. It takes about a week to develop these symptoms after the first exposure.

Duration of the Rashes:-
In MILD cases the rash remains there for 7-10 days after they are full blown erupted.
In MODERATE cases they remain for upto 3 weeks.
In SEVERE cases they remain for upto 6 weeks.

Management:-
**Starting with natural home remedies you need to keep the rashes areas soaked with cold water sponges for soothing relief.

**You may get INFECTION FRO THE POISON IVY if you will scratch the rashes. Don't scratch them.

**Make a paste of baking soda in water and apply to blisters.

**Apply vinegar in water to the area.

**Now as you have started some blistering too, apply Burow's solution (aluminum acetate) to the blisters by making cold compresses with this solution. ( Use if not allergic to aluminum acetate).

**Take shower only with Oatmeal Milk and Honey body wash (no scented soaps). Take a short shower with cool water 2-3 times a day. You may also add Aveeno in bath tub if the body wash not available.

**Use Calamine lotion to the damp skin after a bath to relieve itch. ( No other cream to use like Neosporin, antiallergic cream, topical anesthetic cream etc. They may cause their own allergic reaction to the skin worsening the issues.)

**Take Claritin by mouth to relieve the itch.

**Note: Stop using Pramosone cream. No Spleen has No effects on the disease outcome.
