Posted on Wed, 18 Nov 2015
Question: 58 year old female, 2 months status post fall on 4 or 5 stairs. Severe hip pain (9/!0 on pain scale) AFTER weight bearing. Joint does not hurt upon walking, only feels a bit inflamed. After sitting or laying back down the most excruciating pain occurs. I shake with the pain and my eyes tear up or water and I feel nauseous with it. I am exhausted. Pain is located on left side, groin plus hip socket plus just above butt cheek. NO pain in spine, NO pain in tailbone. very slight edema above butt cheek. X-rays of left hip are unremarkable for fracture or dislocation. Left leg has buckled x3, Only fell onto soft surface so no other injury sustained, but I am using a cane for stability. Per medical advice: 800mg ibuprofen q 6hr routinely. Tried Tylenol 3 with no relief.

Brief Answer:
MRI scan needed to find out any ligament tear.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The extreme pain that you have while resting and a history of buckling is suggestive of a ligament tear due to the fall or an infection in the area. Simple X-ray is sometimes not sufficient to detect this kind of injuries.
It is best to get an MRI scan done to find out any soft tissue abnormality. Taking pain killers will provide only a temporary relief. You can do a hot compress and get some muscle relaxants prescribed for a better relief.
I hope this answers your query.
