Suggest Remedy For Severe Fever With Sore Throat, Chills And Post Nasal Drip

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: I was really sick 8 days ago. Fever of 102-103 sore throat and joint pain/ chills all over. No cough, runny nose ect just the throat pain and joint pain. The fever and chills lasted a day and a half, but sore throat stayed but got less sore each day. It is still sore today and the postnasal drainage i have now is gross tasting and has blood in it time to time when i spit it out. I figured this was a viral thing and was told it prob viral flu and would take time, but now im worried it is turning into bacterial infection because of the blood and nasty taste. I feel fine otherwise. Im not tired or sick feeling just my throat hurts but not bad more irritating than painful at this point and i get coughing spells that last about a minute at a time but they arent from the lungs its a throat irritation cough i believe. I never cough anything up and I sneeze occasionally. Could this viral thing have turned bacterial or is this normal recovery?

Brief Answer:
Upper respiratory tract infection, follow the measures as suggested

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome
I have gone through your query.
Based on the information provided by you, it is a upper respiratory tract infection.
Most URTIs are viral in nature, i do not think it has turned to bacterial and it will resolve with self-care at home with or without over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
Presently I would suggest you to drink plenty of fluid, as it promotes drainage of secretions. So keep drinking warm water, tea and soup at regular intervals. Avoid alcohol, coffee and cigarettes.

Gargling with warm salt water several times a day is one of the most effective remedies for a scratchy and painful throat. Drinking warm lemon water with honey may also help soothe a sore throat. You can also try over the counter cough lozenges.

Steam inhalation with few drop of eucalyptus oil will be helpful for nasal congestion. Do it two to three times a day. Nasal spray like xylometazoline, some mucus/phlegm dissolving medication like acetylcysteine will be beneficial. Try this measures you will be fine.

Post nasal drip usually occurs in URTI and will be subside with the above measures. Blood might be due to congestion of the throat and by coughing.

This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Ok thanks. I cant wait till this goes away. The drainage tastes gross and i feel like my breath stinks. I can see the drainage running down the back of my throat when I look with a flashlight. Its yelllow and my throat feels like its been burnt with acid sometimes. I also have a fever that comes and goes. It will be normal temp then in the 99's and ocasionally jump to the low 100's

Brief Answer:
Follow the measures mentioned in earlier post and oral antihistamine

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Good to hear from you.
Kindly follow the measures as suggested for four to five days, there should be improvement.
Along with the above mentioned measures you can take over the counter oral antihistamine (like cetrizine) during bedtime, which will be beneficial in post nasal drip.
If it persists beyond a week, I would suggest you to visit ENT specialist for examination and to decide on the requirement of course of antibiotic.
Hope this helps.
Take care
