Suggest Remedy For Persistent Burning And Tingling Sensation In Body

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Nov 2015
Question: I am a 61 year old woman. About a month ago I started having symptoms that have gotten progressively worse: sometimes I feel achy all over, have burning, tingling and numbness through various parts of my body in particular my hands and feet. My head is extremely sensitive to touch as is my forehead. My primary care has referred me to a neurologist but I do not see them until next year. I am very busy - I run an office and have a daughter with a disability so I need to function. Any ideas? This started August 3rd when I drove my daughter back to college and was sitting for 10 hours with a few stops for food, gas, etc. I had back pain and numbness in my left back upon my return but attributed it to the long car ride and doing a lot of lifting and cleaning for her. It has now progressed into the abovementioned symptoms.

Brief Answer:
These are suggestive of peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. I have reviewed these symptoms fully and they are suggestive of nerve disease affecting peripheral nerves. This is commonly called neuropathy and may be cause be vitamin deficiency especially vitamin B12, diabetes, hypertension, and many others have no exact cause.

Treatment consists in using drugs that have been shown to be effective against this. Some are fluoxetin, carbamezepin, gabapentin, etc. At this time, I will like that you confirm this diagnosis with your doctor and start treatment. We should be able to witness an improvement within 4-6weeks after the start of treatment. Moderate daily physical exercise is also helpful.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

My primary care prescribed Gabapentin for me. I take 1 300 mg pill 3 times a day with little to no relief. Is this a permanent or temporary condition? How is the diagnosis made?

Brief Answer:
For how long have you taken gabapentin?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Gabapentin usually takes several weeks to function fully. I will like to know for how long you have been using it. If this is more than 6weeks, I will recommend that you get amitryptilline added unto it.

It is not a permanent condition. What needs to be done is that the cause should be identified and managed as well because these medications only control but do not address the main cause.

I hope this helps. Let me hear from you. Thanks and I wish you well.
