Suggest Remedy For Excessive Flatulence And Glaucoma

Question: Thank you Doctor for taking the time. I am 46 Years F. I have been having some sleep problems for the last 5 years or so. I would fall asleep easily but get up at 1:00 am or 2:00 am and then I will take a couple of hours to go back to sleep. I have been on thyroxine for the last 2 years and that somewhat helped my sleep problem. However for the last 6 months I notice that I get up at night with a slight pain in the lower abdomen. I fall asleep after taking some anatacid and passing gas. My flatulence has increased and during day time I pass gas several times with a loud noise. But it is the night times that I dread since I loose sleep. I was prescribed Rabonic plus which helped me ( taken for a month). After I stopped medication, the gas trouble started coming back. Last month , the gastroenterologist I consulted diagnosed this as a problem of intestinal flora and gave me Actigut, Zimigut and Lesuride OD. I got immediate relief, but once I stopped medication, my problems slowly started coming back. The doctor suggested colonoscopy, should I go for this? Also I have early stage Glaucoma so wanted to be sure of taking medications which would affect the eye pressure. I need your help on this please.

Brief Answer:
Pl go for colonoscopy and other tests too

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood your history related to the sleep, bowel and medication under the Gastroenterologist.
Since your symptoms recurred after stopping the said medicines prescribed by your Gastroenterologist, it is indeed necessary to undergo colonoscopy and other investigations.

I would advise in such a case the following:
- Blood- CBC, thyroid function tests, sugar, liver function tests, and whichever your Gastroenterologist would suggest on clinical evaluation.
-Urine
- Stool on 3 different days.
- Ultrasonography, preferably CT scan of the abdomen.
- Any other tests that your Gastroenterologist would ask for.

These tests sometimes help to ascertain other possible causes of GI disturbance.
Other factors also have to be kept in mind:
- Avoid all the foods and beverages which are known to instigate or increase your problems.
- Stress and anxiety are known cause, have to be kept under control, with medicines if required.
-Sleep deprivation also has a direct bearing upon the the GI problems. Ask for medicines for this too.

I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Your feedback is most welcome.
