Posted on Wed, 11 Feb 2015
Question: Once in a while, over the last 8 years I've been having the following symptoms, mostly at night.
Cold shiver, cold left arm, panic, rapid heartbeat and light headed feeling.
It lasts for some time, and then goes away. Sometimes it happens during the day.
No chest pains.
Could this be panic attics?

Brief Answer:
Yes panic attacks possible; but thyroid profile suggested

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Well starting with your suggestion of this possibly being a panic attack, let me say that this is indeed a possibility. The mind is very strong and if at all you are in a such a position where you panic or get anxious easily then this could be due to panic attacks. If you do not mind me asking, have you ever being on psychiatric medications previously? Are you currently depressed, sad, stressed, or anxious?

I would also like to add the possibility of this being a thyroid abnormality. I would thus recommend a thyroid profile (T3, T4, and TSH levels) to be conducted as well. The symptoms mentioned by you are in accordance with thyroid abnormalities.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you so much for taking time to answer my question with great details and insights!
I've never been on psychiatric medications and though there is always enough stress, I've never been depressed. That is not counting upsets and bad mood, but I guess these are pretty normal for all people.
I will make sure to re-check my thyroid, per your suggestion.

Thank you, XXXXXXX
