Question: My daughter (7 years old 32 KG) is having regular allergy complaints and occasional wheezing. This time wheezing started 5 days back and her doctor advised to nebulise with duolin (4 hrs interval on the first day, 6 hrs from second day and 8 hrs from third day), Asthalin 5 ml - 3 times and Montek LC 1/2 tab daily night. We gave this for 5 days and the condition didnt improve. Today again he adviced to repeat the nebulization doze and also prescribed Omnacortil 5 - 7.5mg 3 times daily and Azithral 6ml - 1 time daily. She is having continuous cough. Are these medicines adequate and safe?

Brief Answer:
Right medication and safe

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcare Magic.

I have gone carefully through the details provided by you. Your daughter is likely to be suffering from acute exacerbation of chronic asthma/bronchitis. The medicines prescribed are adequate, safe and effective and I would insist you to continue them. Your may depend on your doctor as he is treating in the correct direction.

I would have probably asked to add 2ml of normal saline with Duolin and continued the nebulisation at 4 hourly intervals. And along with the prescribed medicines, I would perhaps advise a steroid nebulization with Budecort twice a day although oral steroid Omnacortil is being given. But please talk to your doctor before introducing such medicines.

Do this Omnacortil has any side effect? How can I control this in the future?

Brief Answer:
If given in proper dose and then tapered off, side effects unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Let me tell you that any effect of a medicine that we are not seeking (undesired effect) is called side effect. Needless to say that all medicines can have side effects.

Although Omnacortil is a steroid, it is not likely to have side effects, if given for a short time and then gradually the dose is tapered off. It is frequently used in such conditions and you need not worry. You need not be concerned about future steps and things are likely to be fine.

In case you found my answer helpful, please close the thread with a positive review and a 5 star rating.
