Suggest Remedies For Irritated Flaky Skin And Scab Under The Head Of Penis

default
Posted on Thu, 5 May 2016
Question: Hello

I have a problem with skin irritation on my penis.

It started with what I thought was the result of friction irritation from masturbation as a result of calluses on my hand.

I then got flaky skin and scab under the head of the penis and on the right of the shaft.

The skin cleared up round the head ACCEPT for the right side where there are 3/4 areas of pinky/sometimes flaky patches of skin.

Most worryingly, half way down the shaft is a large 2x1cm patch of skin which is raised and leathery in appearance. It looks like a blister.

This has happened over the course of 2-4 weeks.

I have used Canestan cream for a few days but no real improvement.

Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Seborrheic dermatitis Or Psoriasis; topical steroid cream

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am Dr.Kakkar (Dermatologist). I have read your question and I have also reviewed the Image.

I can see well defined, red, scaly patch midway on shaft as well as redness and scaling just next to glans penis.

I would keep a possibility of either seborrheic dermatitis Or plaque psoriasis, which can present as itchy, scaly, erythematous patches/ plaques.

These are not due to candidal infection and therefore would not improve with canesten cream.

If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to apply a moderately potent topical steroid cream e.g triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% cream Or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream, twice daily for a period of two weeks. You may also take a tablet of cetrizine 10 mg once daily at night for symptomatic relief from itching.

Brief Answer:
Hydrocortisone 1% cream is otc

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

You can try if you can get triamcinolone acetonide 0.1%. That would be ideal but i don't think it is otc in UK. Else you can use cotrisone cream (hydrocortisone 1% cream). It is milder but it is otc.
