Suggest Remedies For Intermittent Nose Bleeds When Diagnosed With Celiac Disease

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: Hi Dr. I have a 16 year old daughter with h/o Celiac disease and intermittent nosebleeds (three years or more). Within the last week the nosebleeds have picked up considerably and she is complaining of sporadic dizziness and headaches. She had bloodwork done 2 months ago and all was within normal limits except for low vitamin D, which she is now taking a supplement for. Not sure what my new step should be.

Brief Answer:
A step by step approach needs to be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I do not think that her Celiac disease has anything to do with her nose bleeds. I would speciifcally like to know if the PTime, INR and aPTT have been checked and if so, what are the values. I would also like to know the platelet count. I also need to know if she has been evaluated by an ENT specialist. If not, she needs to get examined by a ENT doctor who could rule out nasal pathologies like nasal polyps which could be a possible cause of her nose bleeds. I would insist her to take steam inhalation. Steam would keep the nasal mucosa hydrated and prevent rupture due to dryness.

About the vitamin D levels, my suggestion would be to go for Injection Arachitol (Vitamin D) 3 lakh units given intramuscular once a month for three such doses alongside the current maintenance dose that she is currently receiving. This will replenish her Vitamin D reserves for about a year.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.
