Suggest Remedies For Fever After Getting A Flu Shot

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: I was given a flu shot yesterday morning. I've been running a temperature of 101 Fahrenheit for the last 36 hours and feel lousy. Should I be considered? I also take the drug Forteo for severe osteoporosis. I've only been on it for two months. Between fever and bone pain, I'm a little concerned.

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Temperature of around 101 F, suggests a viral fever and it usually lasts for around 48-72 hours from the time of onset. This is due to natural course of the viral infection and taking paracetamol and rest will help you recover faster.

There is nothing to worry about. Its been just 36 hours and in one or two days you will be fine.

You can stop taking Forteo till the temperature comes back to normal.
During fever, some amount of body ache and bone pain is expected.
If taking paracetamol does not help, then you can take a single dose of ibuprofen. This will provide relief from fever as well as bone pain.

Maintain adequate hydration. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice.

If the fever does not come down within next 48 hours, then you need to consult a physician and get your blood checked. This should include complete blood count, malarial parasites and widal test. You may need to start on appropriate antibiotics depending upon these reports.

Do let me know if you have any doubts about this answer.

I hope the answer was useful.

Thank you.

Kind regards.

Thank you so much for your help! I've been advised not to stop the Forteo for any reason. My bones are extremely brittle. I have broken my right ankle once and left ankle twice in the last eleven months just walking. All three times they simply crumbled. I'm 5'3" and weigh 135 pounds. I'll follow up with my primary care physician in the morning if this fever doesn't break. I think what really concerns me is my normal temperature is 97.5 degrees. I'll continue taking Advil.
