Suggest Remedies For A Red Blister On The Left Leg

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: I am 65 years old recently diagnosed diabetic, taking Januvia. I have RLS, very frequent muscle cramps in my thighs, calves, feet. My lower legs are swollen and slightly red. My left leg has blisters in the redness. I have bumped my left leg which broke open a blister that continuingly weeps. It won't scab over and is now the size of a 50 cent piece. What can I do to get this area to heal over? It's really a mess to take care of. I'm a full-time music teacher (piano) so I'm seated quite a lot but still make much effort to be on the move.

Brief Answer:
You need treatment with antibiotics. It is a bacterial skin infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone carefully through your concern.
From the picture you attached it seems to be cellulitis, a skin infection caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus that occurs often in persons with compromised immunity such as patient with Diabetes.
You should seek medical help because it needs treatment with antibiotics and prompt treatment is crucial because of potentially rapid progression. If you have fever and chills i would recommend to go to emergency.
Aside from administration of antibiotics, patient care includes the following:

-Symptomatic treatment of aches and fever (if you have)
-Hydration (oral intake if possible)
-Cold compresses
-Elevation and rest of the affected limb: Recommended to reduce local swelling, inflammation, and pain
-Saline wet dressings: Should be applied to ulcerated lesions and changed every 12 hours.

The blood glucose should be in normal ranges in order to heal soon.

Hope i was helpful.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
