Brief Answer: Yes, but not encouraged and highly discouraged! Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. It is generally not advised to use wellbutrin(bupropion) and Effexor(venlafaxine) together. Talk to your doctor before using these drugs together. Wellbutrin alone can cause seizures, especially at higher dosages, and combining it with venlafaxine may increase that risk. The risk of having seizures is higher if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumor or head trauma. Check whether these apply to you, please. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. In this light, we need to use one and only when it fails that we can start with the next at the minimum acceptable dosage and increase progressively to attain our goals of treatment. If you are already taking either of these medications, please let me know. And why do you want to take both together? Would you kindly accept to share the reasons with me? This would be very important to recommend you taking both medications or not. In all, it is not the best thing to do and only considered as last option. Should need be, we start with one and introduce the second starting at the lowest possible dose. Before we d this, tell me whether you have been receiving this medication and what the reasons for this association are. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for clarifications and more information if need be. Dr. Ditah, MD.

Yes I am currently on both meds. I have no physical counter indications such as seizures etc. I am on 300mg of wellbutrin xl and am trying to taper of the effexor per dr.s orders. I have run into trouble with the taper when I got to the lowest dose37.5 so the dr. Increased it to 75mg. The reason I am asking is I have read several blogs where people are taking both meds at the same time and I have 2 friends who also take both at the same time. They have found they work well together and to be honest I felt good with the effexor at the higher dose with the wellbutrin and I am confused by my dr.s desire to get me off the effexor. Prior to starting the wellbutrin I had been on effexor for 14 years and was at a dose of 225mg and had only been on that dose for a few months before the depression returned. I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the 225mg dose so I was unwilling to try a higher dose. The dr. Agreed thus the change.

Brief Answer: Please, ask your doctor to reconsider his decision Detailed Answer: Hi and thanks for this follow up. I a becoming much concerned when doctors stick more to the books than the patient. You have been taking these medications together, you have felt good, you have not had any terrible side effects.......There is no point in trying to stop them simply because the books say so. You feel terrible getting off this drug...Why insist on taking it off. Let your doctor be practical and stop following the text books than the patient's health. Ask him you would not want to stop this medication, you understand the risks and you are ready to undertake it. In all, confront your doctor and let him know you don't cherish the decision. Should an error produce good results, we go with results and may be an opportunity to reconsider the initial point!. I wish you well. Feel free to come back with more related questions.
