Suggest An Alternative Treatment For Knee Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Doctor, My Father is having knee pain past 1 year. His nature of work was standing or sitting by cross leg for more than 8 to 10 hours a day. When we consulted a doctor he suggested us to go for Knee Replacement surgery. I want to know, do we have any other alternative option for this problem. Attaching the photo copy of the MRI report, please suggest the same. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Opinion and necessary options

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and although Age can be one risk factor (knee OA increases after the age of 45) in developing OA changes, do let me know about certain additional risk factors:

i. WEIGHT: being overweight can contribute to the problem
ii. Any past injury or infection

1. Going by the MRI report it is in advanced stage (3-4) of knee OA thus following guidelines are recommended:

i. Get an expert opinion from.an Orthopaedic Surgeon:
. If there is no response to routine treatment
. If knee is swollen, warm and tender
. If there is excessive or large effusion
. If there is wasting of Quadriceps muscles.

ii. Check as routine: Hb%,WBC,ESR,RA Test, X-ray [AP & Lat]

iii. New form of treatment for Knee OA is visco supplement i.e.intra articular injection of hyaluronic acid.

iv. One may go for Osteotomy,.whereas knee replacement is the last resort but with side effects like:
. Infection at the incision site
. Blood.clots
. Require extensive physical and occupational therapy.

v. Take: old brown rice,horse gram,brinjal, garlic,pomegranate XXXXXXX lemon,black grapes,ghee,oil,cocomut water,milk, tamarind,light massage,ise of walking,stick,

Avoid: peas, bitter.gourd, late nights, excess walking and eating, sitting on.floor, climbing stairs as far as possible.

1. Yes, my father is over weight (Height - 170 cms and Weight - 90 kgs)
2. Once he slipped on the floor

We already consulted with the ortho physician and following are the treatment history.

1. Medicines
2. Physiotherapy for knees
3. Knee injection

but still the pain and knee problem is not cured.

I want some opinion in Ayurveda about the alternative treatment for the problem as I heard from my college that He underwent a treatment in Ayurveda for his spinal-cord disc location.

As the problem is in very advance stage, can you please suggest which option is the best by considering his age factor.
