Suggest A Diagnosis And Treatment For Recurrent Chest Discomfort, Random Heart Palpitations And Fleeting Tingling Sensations All Over My Body

Question: Thank you - for the past 8 to 9 months I've experienced chest discomfort (pressure in my chest), heart palpitations and random, fleeting tingling sensations all over my body (scalp, chest area, legs, feet, buttocks). I've seen a cardiologist once each 6 weeks and 6 months ago I had an EKG, an EKG treadmill stress test that showed no signs of ischemic heart disease but did show heart palpitations upon recovery that the Dr. said were benign (and which I felt), and an echocardiagram that the Dr. said was normal. I also saw a neurologist who said I might be hyperventilating but he could find no cause for the tingling sensations I described. I don't feel comfortable exercising, I don't know what's going on with me. Can you offer any suggestions?

I would recommend as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Welcome and thank you for asking us.

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your complaints could be related to a possible thyroid hormone imbalance.

For this reason, I would recommend checking first your thyroid hormone levels in order to make the proper dose adjustments to your therapy if necessary.

I would also recommend performing further tests to investigate for the possible causes:

- an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring (Holter) to examine your heart rhythm trends and investigate for possible cardiac arrhythmia
- a chest X ray study and pulmonary function tests to exclude a possible lung disorder
- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes for possible electrolyte imbalance.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hello Dr., and thank you - I actually have had the thyroid blood tests; my Dr. determined that I had hypothyroidism, and I am taking medication that has returned the thyroid to normal levels. Also, I forgot to mention that my Dr. had me take a sleep test and I was diagnosed with chronic obstructive sleep apnea - I have been using a CPAP machine since November 2017 but it doesn't seem to have helped the tingling sensations or the heart palpitations.

Hello again!

Thank you for the additional information!

Coming to this point, I would recommend performing the other above mentioned tests:

- a Holter monitoring
- blood electrolytes for possible imbalances
- complete blood count.

It is also necessary checking vitamin B12 and vitamin D plasma levels for possible deficiency.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Wishing all the best,
