Question: Hi my name is XXXXX I am 37 yrs old, I have had a sore knee since last November and a cough for the last 5 weeks, I recently went on holidays from Cairns to Sydney and from Sydney to Bali when I arrived in Sydney I noticed the next day I had bruises on my left leg one big one on my thigh and lots everywhere else I found this strange as I don't remember bumping myself anywhere also my feet and hands felt swollen. Once leaving Sydney (there for 4 days) I flew to Bali and then noticed not only did l have a sore leg and foot (made me limp a bit) but I then had bruises on the other leg, when in bali I did a huge trek (6hrs) and noticed my feet and fingers felt swollen , after 2 weeks in bali the bruises healed and when I flew home again l never got any more bruises but I went to a relay for life walk overnight and my feet and ankles felt swollen again and now I have sore glands under my arm pits and am sweating a lot at night I have been low in iron on and off for a long time after 6months of taking iron tablets my iron returned back to normal but am sure it is low again as I have been having really heavy periods and they are starting to be irregular the last time my periods were only 18 days apart what do you think? in the past I was always regular they have only been irregular in the last 2 years or so

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The feeling of swelling, spontaneous appearance of bruises and heavy bleeding during your periods are all worrisome findings and can be due to a bleeding disorder.
You need to consult your physician to get a complete blood coagulation profile checked with APTT and platelet count to rule out any possible causes like thrombocytopenia.
This can also happen due to a viral infection in the recent past- decreases the synthesis of platelets from the bone marrow.
Presence of any autoimmune disorders also needs to be ruled out.
The treatment is based on the diagnosis and severity of the problem. Treatment is usually done by stopping all pain killers, fluid infusion, steroids, immunoglobulins, blood transfusions, etc according to the severity of the condition.

I hope this answers your query.
