My Mom Is 83, And Will Be 84 In December.

Question: My mom is 83, and will be 84 in December. She has been struggling with the "urge" to do a bowel movement, but goes to the bathroom, and the majority of the time is just pee, or gas. Other times its a speck that she'll "push" out. She has her regular BM's a few times a day, morning usually after breakfast and after a major meal. The only medications she is on are cynthroid (for her Thyroid), Metaprolol testrate (?) for blood pressure, and Eliquis (new for her as of last August). She does not have high blood pressure, but has Atral Fib (?) post a Stroke she had 2 years ago. She takes vitamins and supplements shes taken for several years. (The only 2 new medications are the blood pressure and Eliquis). What would cause this "urge" to go many times a day, but most of the time only has to pee? She thinks it might be because of her bladder dropping and pressuring the body parts for BM's? It is very frustrating for her, and she feels the need to stay and be near a bathroom all the time, because she never knows when it will be a poop, and does not want to poop her pants. (Like I had mentioned, though, most of the time it is only pee - so her fears are not realized.) Therefore, trying to do fun activities with her to have a nice quality of life is basically non-existant. Is there a reason for this? Is there a remedy? Could it be due to one of the new medications? (Side note - she eats well, drinks enough water and we believe gets plenty of fiber every day. She has almonds for a snacks, eats fruit, salad, and vegetables, steel cut oats/raisin XXXXXXX or eggs and muffin/fruit for breakfast. Basically what I am trying to say, is I do not believe it is her diet. She definitely gets at least 21 grams of fiber a day.) Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (She already wears a "Poise" pad all the time. I'm wondering if I need to suggest she wear the "Poise or Depend Underwear" instead?) Is this "normal" for someone her age to just have to live with, and start wearing the depend underwear, and that's her only option? Or, is there something else she is able to do to fix this problem? Thank you SO much!

Brief Answer:
may be related to a condition called tenesmus

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that she may have rectal tenesmus, this refers the sensation of incomplete emptying of the bowel.

There are quite a number of different causes and treatment depends on the particular cause.

Some of the most common causes include: (1) infection of the anus or rectum

(2)pelvic organ collapse- this can occur in women , most commonly present with aging, due to weakening of the structures of pelvis.

(3)diverticular disease- this refers to the presence of outpouches/divercula in the colon. It is benign (not cancerous)

(4)mass in the colon- not common

(5)inflammatory bowel disease- inflammation of the colon can cause these symptoms. Inflammatory bowel disease refers to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis

(6)irritable bowel syndrome

These are some of the causes.

The medications that were added are not known causes though persons react differently to medication

She may want to see her doctor again for an assessment or seek a second opinion from another GP.
A gastroenterologist (specialist that deal with the bowel), is another option

As mentioned, treatment would depend on the diagnosis and exact cause found

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
