Is Vaginal Bleeding After An Injury A Serious Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, yesterday I slipped on the stairs and landed on the edge of the step on my lower back.I couldn't put any weight on my left leg and was in severe pain. I went to A and E they gave me cocodimal and tramadol. My blood pressure dropped and I ended up in resus. I had a drip and oxygen and everything returned to normal. An x-ray showed no breaks. I had some vaginal bleeding but this settled (I also have a coil). I am now at home and the bleeding has retuned I have a swelling on my lower back. Should I be concerned or is it likely to settle on its own?

Brief Answer:
Sometimes vaginal bleeding can be due to extreme stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
XXXX

Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I came to know that you got injury on your lower back yesterday. You was in severe pain, your blood pressure lowered(probably due to pain-vagovagal shock). Your fracture was excluded by x-ray.

Now you have two issues.

You have swelling in lower back . It is probably hematoma under skin . It will gradually resolve in due course. You has been already prescribed cocodimal and tramadol, you can continue them for pain as per prescription of your doctor.

Second issue is vaginal bleeding yesterday and now at home. Extreme stress can give rise to vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods. You need not to worry much about some bleeding as can be due to stress of trauma. But if bleeding is heavy then you should consult your doctor. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.
Take care.

Hi,
thank you for your reply. I would say that the bleeding is not particularly heavy but I have a dragging feeling and I should say that I have not had any loss at all from the coil for about 12 months. I should also say I am not pregnant as they did a test yesterday. I also do not have tramadol as the hospital thought it may have been that that caused my blood pressure to drop.

Welcome back.

After going through your query and follow up query I think that Extreme stress can give rise to vaginal bleeding. This bleeding as can be due to stress of trauma. I think it is not related to coil. However you should see gynecologist if it continue more than 5-7 days.Rest already discussed. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.
