Is Travelling Safe While Suffering From Productive Cough And Fever?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, I am a 25 year old female patient with severe flu like symptoms - frequent productive and spasmodic cough, running nose at times, moderate to high fever (101 F), bodyache esp at joints. Have been taking Amoxycillin 500 thrice daily since yesterday (my first day of infection), along with Paracetamol 500 mg for management of fever and body pain.

What is the outlook, doctor since I am due to travel today ? Are my meds and dosage ok ?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic needed only if sign of bacterial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Most likely you are having a viral respiratory infection. Usually it is self limiting and only thing you need to do is take proper rest , take proper fluids and supportives. You can take paracetamol for fever or body pain , anthistamnes like cetirizine (zyrtec) once daily, nasal decongestants in case of nasal congestion, mucolytics like dextromethorphan. You can also take chewable vitamin C , tea with lemon and honey , warm chicken soup with pepper. It usually last for 5 to 7 days. severity will decrease after 3 days.
But if you have signs of secondary bacterial infection like yellowish sputum or increase in fever or cough then antibiotics like amoxicillin will be needed. As you taking it thrice daily already, you can complete the dosage of 5 days like this. Next time avoid taking antibiotics without doctors advise as it can do more harm than good.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
