Is Travelling Safe When On Treatment For Tinnitus?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I saw my MD today for tinnitus ( clicking only) in my left ear only: it's been bothering me for many days with no other symptoms besides a bit of fullness in front of left ear. She says eardrum is retracted. I took Sudafed and Aleve with some relief. I take no other meds aside from estrogen/testosterone pellets implanted for surgical menopause , I don't smoke, I'm 46 years old female and healthy otherwise . No runny nose or cough, no GERD symptoms, no recent illness and no recent exposure to loud noises etc. We are planning to fly on Tuesday. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Can fly on Tuesday

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Retraction of the ear drum often causes tinnitus which takes several weeks to get better. You can go ahead and fly on tuesay, it should not cause any problems. Here are my suggestions

1. Wear ear plugs while landing and take off
2. Breath through the mouth during landing and take off
3. If there is a sensation of blocked ear, I recommend that you close both nostrils and exhale lightly for relief
4. Along with the drugs prescribed, I suggest Tab Vertin thrice daily for a week, I have seen good symptomatic relief in my patients.

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
