Is Travelling Okay When Having Herpes Infection?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: My mom needs to fly from XXXXXXX to US, but over the last few days, she has developed some inflammation in the blood vessels in the back of her scalp and on the temples. She says they are not painful, just raised and palpable. She has mentioned jaw pain as well. Will it be safe for her to take her flight back to the U.S.? As this is a new onset of this condition, is it safe to rule out blood vessel rupture?

Hello

Thanks for the query

Since your mother is taking a flight which could be well over 18 hours it is very important that I know more details about her present condition. Please get back to me with the following details

1. Inflammation of vessels is usually not visible , it is painful and tender to touch . Since your mother is not complaining of any pain it is unlikely to be inflammation of the vessels
2. Raised and palpable lesions associated with jaw pain could be heroes, but again they are painful
3. Is there any ear pain as well?
4. Was there any fever or joint pains ?
5. Any history of giddiness ?
6. why is she taking prednisolone ?

Please attach a picture if you can, it will be very helpful

Hi, and thanks for the quick response. The vessels were painful in the beginning, but are not anymore. She says she can still feel them on her scalp, but the pain is gone. She said she has not had any ear pain, but there was fever and some jaw pain a few days ago when this started. The scalp pain, fever, and jaw pain have all resolved since she started taking prednisone. She started the prednisone, since she had similar lesions when she had poison ivy, and prednisone at that time was effective in curing the inflammation/lesions.

Brief Answer:
Herpes infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Fever followed by painful vesicular eruptions sounds like herpes. I strongly suggest you to meet a local physician for anti viral drugs like acyclovir . Taking prednisolone might cause the infection to flare up.
Flare during travel might cause a lot of inconvenience, I recommend that she flies after a week once it settles down

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

I wish your mom a speedy recovery
