Question: hello doc.
I had unprotected sex 7-8 days back, after which my wife took i-pill. So it has been 7 - 8 and she has not got her menstrual yet. And from last 4 days, her feet are swelled up and the swelling is not going away. so is this any indication that she is pregnant?

Brief Answer:
The pill must have caused the side effect.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

You did not mention when she is due for her natural period and if she is on any regular contraception or some other medication.

I presume she has regular cycles. The emergency pill contains high doses of progesterone. This creates hormone imbalance and can lead to withdrawal bleeding and delay in the next natural period by a week or two. This is the most likely cause of the delayed period.

Swelling of the feet can be a side effect of the pill effect. Yet, I would suggest a proper clinical evaluation to detect the cause and plan further management. This is not an indication of pregnancy.

Please remember that ovulation occurs two weeks prior to the onset of the next period and this is the fertile period. This is the phase when conception can occur.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
