Question: I got my tonsils out on Tuesday, I was wondering when I could start smoking again, or If smoking shisha/hookah was better since its vapour.

Brief Answer:
After 4-6 weeks. Avoid smoking altogether if possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The normal healing time is 4 to 6 weeks, though a normal diet can be started after 2 weeks.

2. Hence you should wait for 2-4 weeks before resuming smoking. You can smoke any time but smoking while the tonsil fossa is still raw increases chances of damage to the healing areas and sensitizing the body to chemicals in the smoke. This could be problematic in the long run.

3. It will be ideal if you can take this opportunity to stop / quit smoking.

4. Sheesha / Hookah is worse as even though the smoke is bubbled through water, there is no filter unlike cigarettes.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
