Is Resting Heart Rate Of 79 Bpm A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hello, I have a resting heart rate of 79 bpm. I'm 39, female and exercise several times per week. Over the past few weeks I have been feeling dizzy and have had pains in my chest and rapid heart beat. I'm under a lot of pressure at work but am worried that something is wrong with my heart. There is a history of heart disease on my dad's side of the family with 2 brothers passing away in their 40's from heart attacks. My dad did not have one until he was 70.

Brief Answer:
Though it appears like anxiety, medical conditions need to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Your heart rate is in the normal range if 79 per minute at rest.

2. There is a lot of stress in your daily life and at work in particular, and though the symptoms are more likely to be due to anxiety related stress, other medical conditions presenting with similar symptoms require attention.

3. I hope you have your meals on time and include a balanced 1800 kcal diet suitable for your age.

4. In view of cardiac problems on your father's family members, it is good if you can get a basic heart check done at your local hospital after discussing with your GP. The basic tests for the heart include an ECG, echocardiography and cardiac enzymes.

5. I wonder if there are other associated problems like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and thyroid dysfunction in your family and if yes then getting tested for these conditions might also help.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
