Is Red Wine Advisable While On Lopid To Reduce Triglycerides Levels?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Mar 2016
Question: Hello doctor - i have 2 questions. My triglycerides are >500 and i am currently taking lopid daily.

1-is it ok to take lopid either in afternoons or nights? Does it make a difference?
2-also is it ok to drink red wine (say approx 200 ml) once or twice a month. Does it have any health benefits at all? There are different perspectives but would like to understand this from a medical standpoint.

Thanks much.

Brief Answer:
Lopid can be taken in afternoon or night.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome to Healthcare Magic!

I have read your query and understand the concern.

1) Lopid drug (Gemfibrozil) belongs to a group of drugs known as "fibrates."

There is no much difference if you take lopid in afternoon or night, however if you are also taking statins (for example atorvastatin) simultaneously which is commonly given in night, then Lopid should be taken in the afternoon.

2) Red wine could be beneficial for health but only when taken in moderation.

It contains resveratrol and other substances which have anti-oxidant property and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other diseases which are associated with oxidation induced damage.

However, the benefits of red wine are not due to its alcohol content but due to the presence of other chemicals.

Means there are many other foods that are rich in anti-oxidants.

But one thing should be clear that red wine cannot save the body from the harmful effects of its alcohol content. Therefore, it is both good and bad for the body.

However, there is no issue if you take 200 ml or so red wine once or twice in a month.

Hope this detailed explanation is helpful.
