Brief Answer:
Very low chances of pregnancy...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Post pregnancy for a period of few months especially when the child is breast feeding, the mother is protected against pregnancy. This duration where the mother remain protected varies from couple of months to an year. In most of my patients, this period lasted for 4-5 months. However it is extremely difficult to predict duration of protection.

In short, I would say, unprotected sexual intercourse at this time when mother is breast feeding has a very low chance of pregnancy. But if you are not planning for a second child right away (which is a very good choice), I will recommend using other form of contraception like barrier (condom). This will make sure she is absolutely protected from unwanted pregnancy.

Hope I am clear. I will be obliged to clarify further if necessary.

Thanks doctor. I have two more doubt .
We had unprotected sex last week, her period is not started after delivery baby. So I have not used condom.

1. Once period started if we do sex after that only she will get chance of pregnancy again????

2. Can you say or confirm , is there chance of pregnancy before period starts if we do the unprotected sex?

My wife fears now. Pls advise

Brief Answer:
Cannot rule out pregnancy...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The problem here is that period resumes after ovulation. And there are no means to detect ovulation. You will have to wait for 2-3 weeks . If period doesn't come, get tests for pregnancy.

Make sure to use other contraception after unprotected sexual intercourse.

Thanks doctor.
Blood test is necessary or
we will use pregnancy kit which is available in medical shop (urine test ).
Which will be correct mode of check.
Can you suggest any contraception pills.

Brief Answer:
Blood test superior than urine pregnancy kit...

Detailed Answer:
Urine pregnancy kit has some limitations. If a choice is available, I will suggest blood hCG level test (pregnancy).

Until period resumes, I suggest barrier method (condom). You can choose other contraception method thereafter after period resumes.

Hope this helped.
