Brief Answer:
Review of high BP medications and consulting cardiologist is recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
At 54 years age, it is better that your mother consults a cardiologist and then gets investigated in detail including an echocardiography and certain heart specific blood tests.

A diagnosis of borderline left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) can be expected in a patient having high blood pressure of 160/ 100 mm Hg at 54 years age. The borderline LVH is not a concern right now but if she does not take proper medications and reduce the high BP to below 140/ 90 mm Hg with medications then there will be increase in LVH which can affect ejection fraction of heart (pumping capacity) later. This can cause more risk of heart failure.

Controlling diabetes and high blood pressure will benefit her and prevent from further progress of heart disease risk. She should get her high blood pressure medications reviewed by a cardiologist and also modify diet lifestyle factors and medications such that diabetes and high blood pressure is controlled.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek
