Is It Safe To Work In An Moldy Environment While Suffering From Asthma?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with Asthma recently and I am working at a work environment which is extremely moldy due to the artisan meat processing. Before I was diagnosed, I had always breathing problems, dry cough and headache when I get into that moldy environment. Should I continue to work at this environment or ask my doctor to restrict me from this work environment?

Brief Answer:
Better to change your work place.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Asthma is allergic disease affecting airways.
It is having causative and aggravating factors.
Causative factors are responsible for the asthma while aggravating factors are responsible for worsening of asthma.
And the first step in the treatment of asthma is identification of aggravating factors and if possible complete avoidance of it.
Molds can cause worsening of asthma. So this can be your aggravating factor.
And you are also experiencing worsening of breathing problems, cough and headache after entering into the work place.
So all these suggest that work place exposure (molds) is the aggravating factor in your case and hence you should avoid it.
For avoidance you can use face mask with filter or change the job.
So consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
In my opinion change of work environment is more useful option in your case.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
