Is It Safe To Have Allercet And Diominic-DCA During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: Hello Dr.
I am 5 and a half months pregnant. Had a miscarriage with twins in 2012. This time Conceived with frozen embryo ivf transfer in Nov 2014. Last LMP was Oct 2014. I have allergic rhinitis since 2012 and have been taking tablet allercet(cetrizine hydrochloride) since then.

Now in this pregnancy also I am taking allercet as and when my allergy symptoms are high. Since two months I am taking this Tablet almost everyday or every alternate days because of extreme sneezing . And since two days I am down with severe cold and throat pain and my gynaec prescribed diominic dca and azithral 500 for 3 days.

Is it safe to take all these tablets?? This is my 5th month going on. I hope so many medicines won't cause any adverse effects on my baby.

Kindly help.

Brief Answer:
Yes, safe to take them.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Azithromycin can be used during pregnancy.
IT is quite safe, if there is indication for its use.
FOr severe URTI ( Upper respiratory tract infection ), it is advised to take the azithromycin.
Cetirizine also is quite safe for use during pregnancy.
Diominic DCA can be used for a brief period of time, not long term.
As you are genuinely suffering from these issues, yes, you can take the prescribed drugs.
Best is to use symptomatic treatment.
Soups with ginger, XXXXXXX pepper and chicken.
Hot broths, soup.
Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil.
Apply Vicks.
Stay away from triggers.
Take daily vitamin C supplements ( tablet Limcee or Celin daily one tablet ).
Eat nutritious food, drink lots of liquids.
IF you need these medications, take them without anxiety, as they will not have any side effects on your child.
All the best

Thanks for your response Dr.

One of my biggest concerns now is...I sneeze really hard due to my allergic rhinitis almost 20 times a day and I have pain in my lower abdomen at times. Is that bad for the baby? And also long term use of cetrizine...is that bad for the baby??

Brief Answer:
Relax, it is okay.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the appreciation.
Some amount of pain and discomfort is common during pregnancy.
You cannot really help sneezing , can you ?
I assume you would already be on some form of progesterone support, as this is a precious IVF pregnancy.
Just continue taking progesterone, it helps in relaxing the uterus.
You should have internal ultrasound cervical assessment to know if you are at risk of preterm labour.
Why did the earlier miscarriage occur, could you elaborate on that ?
And cetirizine is quite safe, do not worry.
Please go through this link, it will reassure you, read the section on Cetirizine specifically -

Thanks Dr.
My previous pregnancy was a natural conception with monochorionic monoamniotic twins. Went into preterm labor at 21 weeks starting with bleeding. Dr said it was because of some infection. We tried naturally for two years and then opted for ivf. First fresh transfer cycle failed and I conceived in the frozen cycle. This was a triplet pregnancy but two babies' heartbeats stopped at 10 weeks . Single baby is fine. I was on susten injections till 16 weeks. Now on susten tablet twice a day and proluton depot injection once week.
Dr said she will do a scan this March 17th (will start my 6th month then) to measure the cervical length to see if I will need a cervical cerclage.

Thanks so much for your response Dr on cetrizine and other concerns. Really appreciate it. Will message you. Thank you.

Hello again.
Thank you so much for your appreciation
Am glad this time around things are going fine so far.
You should be very careful though.
And yes, a cervical encirclage should be done, it will pre empt any possible preterm labour.
You are already on SUsten and proluton depot, both are progesterone preparations, so do not worry.
You already have the direct link, you can reach me directly anytime whenever you wish to have a second opinion.
Take care.
