Question: Hi
I am a 6 yr survivor of breast cancer caused from long term affect of depo. This was not given to me for birth control - it was stop me from bleeding constantly for 3 yrs. I have completed the Evista program which now puts me perm below risk but my oncologist is still pushing for me to have a hystorecomy as she feels I am still at a high risk of getting cancer on this area. I almost 55 yrs old and in peramenmause. I have had cysts on my ovaries but nothing serious. I have stress incontience, never had children & am in desperate need of the sling operation. My new GYM is suggesting I do both at the same time as the recovery time is the same. My worry is what are the pros and cons of a hysto? I have heard so many stories of people that wishes they never would have done it & less saying it was the best decision they made. I have researched a lot on the web but really need to know what is the ratio of my potenitally getting cancer int he ovaries or uteris when I was on depo for over 25 yrs & it was the known cause of my breast cancer. Need help deciding so I do not make a decision I would soon be regretting.
Thanks so much - XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
39% reduction in the risk of ovarian cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The use of depot is associated with a 39% reduction in the risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer.

Women who have used oral contraceptives have a lower risk of ovarian cancer.

The lower risk is seen after only 3 to 6 months of using the pill, and the risk is lower the longer the pills are used. This lower risk continues for many years after the pill is stopped.

Using depot has a lower risk of ovarian cancer. The risk was even lower if the women had used it for 3 or more years.

Hysterectomy may cause complications such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, bowel dysfunction and pelvic organ fistula formation. These outcomes are particularly relevant as it may severely impair your quality of life.

Since you have also completed the Evista program i do not think you need a hysterectomy operation at this moment.

Thank you for the percentage & ratios. This is what I was seeking. I already have stress incontinence & this surgery is needed before years end as I am bring extra change of clothes with me when I leave the house.

I was on birth control for many many years just to control bleeding, so between that and the depo shot for over 25 yrs it sounds like I am not at the high risk my oncologist is making me feel.
I think I shall choose just the sling surgery & avoid the hysto as I am too active to have my quality of life reduced.

Brief Answer:
sling surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Hysterectomy can cause pelvic floor dysfunction and urinary incontinence which may affect your quality of life and since you have already been on depot and evista you are at minimal risk for ovarian cancer.

I suggest you choose the sling surgery as u are having stress incontinence and avoid hysterectomy.
